Deerness community came together last Friday for a heart warming Harvest Home celebration. Over 100 people gathered to enjoy delicious home-cooked food, inspiring speeches, and lively dancing.

The hall was transformed into a festive space, adorned with locally sourced produce, including rare sheaves of wheat, a testament to the area’s agricultural heritage. The committee, led by Chair Catriona Robertson, worked tirelessly to prepare a traditional meal of mince and clapshot, which was served to a hungry crowd.

A highlight of the evening was Kathryn Sclater’s captivating speech, which explored the rich history and connections between Deerness and neighbouring parishes. Her words resonated with the audience with humorous reminiscence.

As the meal concluded, Vice-Chair Brenda Foubister expressed gratitude to the committee members who had worked so hard to make the event a success. Special thanks were extended to Kathryn Sclater for her inspiring speech and to Alan Scott for providing the rare sheaves. The bar staff, Gina and Paul, were also acknowledged for their efficient service throughout the night.

The festivities continued with a lively dance, as the Stronsay Band filled the hall with energetic music. All ages took to the floor and danced the night away.

This year’s Harvest Home was a resounding success, showcasing the importance of preserving local traditions.
