A very cold start to the New Year with fresh or strong northerly winds. Snow showers will turn increasingly frequent and heavy through the day. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Tonight:

A cold evening and night with snow showers continuing. Strong northerly winds, increasing to gale force at times across Shetland overnight. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday 2nd January:

A cold day with snow showers continuing, becoming more frequent in the evening. Strong northerly winds, gales across Shetland, becoming northwest later. Maximum temperature 1 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Remaining cold with further snow showers, although these generally lighter than previous days. Winds easing.
