The Starling is the number 1 bird in Orkney in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch of 2025.

41,630 people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch in Scotland, where the number 1 spot went to the House Sparrow with the Starling coming in at number 2.

The Top Ten for Orkney are:

  1. Starling
  2. House Sparrow
  3. Feral Pigeon
  4. Blackbird
  5. Collared Dove
  6. Goldfinch
  7. Greenfinch
  8. Wood Pigeon
  9. Rook
  10. Robin

And the results for Scotland are:

For the UK as a whole 1,211,260 people took part and the House Sparrow came in at number 1, the Blue Tit no.2, Wood Pigeon at 3, and at number 4 the Starling whose numbers are down on the 2024 results.

  1. I am so very glad to know that the house sparrow is doing well there. Time was in eastern-central Canada that they were common. Towards autumn, weedy patches of lawn wriggled with feeding flocks of sparrows; in summer, it was not unusual to see them dust-bathing where puddles had dried up. Now, we almost never see them. When we do, we see an individual or pair, not more. Sad.
