By Bernie Bell

I haven’t walked the full circuit from our house for a good while, and thought it’s the time of year to do so to see the spring flowers and new life in general. So we did this walk….

…in reverse.

In the ditch by the road to the Bay of Hinderayre – the first Flaggers I’ve seen this year

2 flag yellow iris flowers

And a bank of fresh, new Ferns

a bank of ferns along the ditch

By the shore, Thrift

the shoreline with some small thrift plants at its edge

Along the track, and turning up from the Kirkyard – young heifers, interested as usual

young cattle crowding at the fence looking at a walker on the path

Walking  up the track to the T-junction, Purple Vetch

a single flowering purple vetch in the long grass

A bank of Buttercups

a mass of flowering yellow buttercups

And a lovely clump of  Red clover

flowering purple clover in the grass

By the track down to the Hall of Rendall, Birds-foot Trefoil

yellow flowering birds foot trefoil in amongst the grass banking

Bullocks, with Gairsay in the back-ground

a small group of young cattle crowding to the fence

A single magnificent Fern

a very large fern

Then, by the little path to the Doocot, a patch of mixed Ladies-Smock, Orchids, Daisies and Buttercups

cluster of different wild flowers

Plus Horse-tails

a horse tail plant in amongst the grasses

And  – could be Water-cress or could be Fools-cress –  it fooled us!

a flowering plant possible of the cress family

On the way back, by the side of the main road, an old stone stile which we’ve never noticed before

a dry stone wall with stone steps built into it to allow a person to climb over

– there’s always something new to see!

Thank you! It really is a lovely walk, with lots of interest.

  3. Thanks for this collection. Each year I’m reminded how much I enjoy the June flowering. And there’s always a mystery plant to keep me smiling. They don’t know their names either 😉.
