And just like that a wonderful BookBench appeared in the grounds of Orkney Library in Kirkwall.

The BookBench Trail has been produced by Clan Cancer Support and  Wild in Art. These beautiful art installations can be found from July – September 2025 across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. Each BookBench sculpture is designed by some of the country’s most talented artists.

Clan chose the BookBench sculpture, which depicts an open book, because of the charity’s lifeline listening support service which enables anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis to open up and tell their story.

We hope the sculpture, which can seat two adults, will encourage people to take time to reflect on their wellbeing as they enjoy discovering the artwork on the trail. Clan Cancer Support

‘The Silver Darlings’ is by the artist Shelagh Swanson and is sponsored by Pentland Ferries.

Visitors to the Kirkwall branch of the Library and passers by will also have noticed some other changes to the outdoor seating area with raised planters and interactive sensory installations on the boundary wall.
