Sgathaich, an old woman with long hair and wearing a crown

When Disney bought Star Wars off George Lucas, there was a great uproar from people. But not from me. Firstly, Lucas himself had been retconning things and enraging the fanbase for well over a decade.

Secondly, though the extended universe was going, logically it had to, if a new bunch of movies was to come in, you couldn’t be expected to read THAT many books before enjoying episode 7 (yes I know episode 8 and 9 didn’t turn out well not my point). The expanded universe was always a gap fill due to the lack of those movies that Lucas cancelled because his prequel trilogy… wasn’t good and people didn’t like it (and its still not good, stop trying to retcon that in your head, they were bad, don’t make me tie you to a chair and make you rewatch episode 2 over and over). So today we are looking at one of the entries in the expanded universe.

title screen of Star Wars Droids

Star Wars Droids was an animated series starring R2-D2 and C-3P0. As a small child I remember having had a recording of one of the episodes of this show, an extra long episode that was a mini movie. The show itself meanwhile is broken up into several chapters with episodes all connected to that story. The Trigon One is the first one of these chapters and covers the first 4 episodes.

The show begins with our two leads on the desert of the Planet Ingo (had to check it wasn’t Tatooine)  having been dropped there by their last owner. By luck they encounter and are taken in by Speeder racers Jord Dusat and Thall Joben. However they stumble into a location and are soon set on by the droid forces of Tig Fromm who will keep going on about how he wants to replace his father and replace all his workers and thugs with Droids, as well as mentioning a super weapon the Trigon One. They escape from him after encountering Kea Moll.

The 4 episodes deal with them encountering Tig’s father, the crime lord Sise Fromm and leader of the Fromm gang. They want the racers dead due to them knowing the whereabouts of the Trigon one. Complicating matters is when Kea Moll is revealed to be a member of the rebellion and there to stop the weapon.

The finale of the story sees a famous face as The Fromm’s hire the legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett to take out our heroes, before this first arc and story comes to an end.

It’s neat watching a show you haven’t seen from when you were a wee bairn. And even then that was only the special episode, not the show itself. Each episode did feel like its own story but also forming a part of the longer tale. No episode was left on a cliff-hanger. The Fromm’s were a somewhat entertaining group of villains, the first episode featuring Tig’s delusions of a droid focused tomorrow, and while his father came off as a more experienced antagonist, by the end of the story arc they are barely holding together on a rust pile clinging onto one last act of revenge before being taken away.

The animation can look a bit odd to some, a little bit stylized which may leave C-3P0’s eyes burned into your soul. But I wasn’t too distracted. Ultimately it was a small adventure in the Star Wars universe featuring 2 of the non Skywalkers somewhat away from the main action, which is what I feel the franchise could do more of now.

The entire series is on Disney+ and I may come back to see the next chapter some time in the future.
