Orkney CAB AGM

By Nick Morrison

The 2017 AGM of the Citizens Advice Bureau was held as a public meeting on Tuesday 21st November at the St Magnus Center Kirkwall. The Chairman Lyndsay Hall welcomed everyone and went swiftly through the usual formal business, the Directors were re-elected en bloc for example. He then  invited the guest speaker Michelle Robertson of Women’s Aid Orkney to speak.

Domestic AbuseMichelle gave a report on the setting up and running of the Women’s refuge in Orkney. There was resistance in some quarters initially to the setting up of the refuge because of a perceived lack of need. However the truth is that the incidence of domestic abuse in Orkney is the same as that for central Glasgow. This paralleled the same perceived lack of need for a Food Bank which has subsequently helped hundreds of people.

The Women’s refuge has helped 103 Women and 43 children this year. It has accommodation for 3 families with plans to increase that, such is the need. On average a woman will have suffered 35 incidents of domestic abuse before she seeks help from Women’s Aid or the Police. The cost to the UK economy is reckoned to be £ 23 billion a year so it is a serious issue. That however is mere money, the mental anguish and distress suffered by the women and children is far far worse.
