As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney and Orkney College UHI, are holding an Apprenticeship Information event on Wednesday 6th March 2019, in the Overblikk Restaurant at Orkney College, East Road, Kirkwall.
Apprenticeships and work-based learning are providing the skills needed for a successful Orkney. With that in mind this year’s theme is ‘Skills for the Future’, recognising the importance of investing in our workforce. Apprenticeship opportunities in Orkney are growing and we want as many young people and employers as possible to benefit.
This event will give parents and young people an opportunity to learn more about the three types of Apprenticeships in Orkney, how they can support you and how you can use them to develop the skills you need.
At the event there will be presentations about the three types of apprenticeships available in Orkney:
- Foundation Apprentice
- Modern Apprentice
- Graduate Apprentice.
Foundation Apprentice
In S5 or S6, you can do a Foundation Apprenticeship as one of your senior subject choices. You’ll get the chance to learn in a real workplace and develop the new skills your future employers need, giving you a competitive edge while you’re still at school.
Modern Apprentice
Get a job. Get paid. Get qualified. With a Modern Apprenticeship you learn on the job, and get the experience you need. Plus, you work towards a qualification.
Graduate Apprentice
Get a job, get paid and get a degree at the same time. A Graduate Apprenticeship helps you build the skills and knowledge that Scottish industries need. You’ll work, get paid, and achieve a degree – even up to masters level. You’ll spend most of your time learning on the job, but will also be a student at a university or college.
There is also the opportunity to hear from local employers who have experience in hiring and developing apprenticeships in Orkney.
This event is a great chance to speak to apprenticeship providers at a time when young people are starting to make serious decisions about their future and to see what opportunities are available locally in Orkney.
There are 20 spaces available to parents and young people who would like to learn more about apprenticeships in Orkney and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
If you would like to attend, please get in touch with DYW Orkney on 01856 569 353 or orkneydyw@uhi.ac.uk.
