“More Barn!” Classic Album Sundays celebrates Neil Young – Harvest + After The Goldrush
In 1972 when Neil Young wanted to play his new album Harvest to his friend and sometime collaborator Graham Nash, they rowed a boat out into the middle of the lake on Young’s California ranch.
The huge bank of speakers for the left channel was set up in Young’s house with all the windows open whilst the right channel speakers where over in the barn which was also a make-shift studio.
After a few minutes Neil said to his friend, “It’s too house heavy.” before standing up in the boat and shouting at the top of his voice to his producer on the shore “MORE BARN!!!”.

Join Classic Album Sundays Orkney curator Adrian Holmes next Sunday afternoon (4th August) at 4pm at The Sound Archive in Kirkwall to celebrate Neil Young and hear many more tales of one of rock’s most prolific, uncompromising & outspoken singer-songwriters before listening to both After The Goldrush and Harvest on vinyl, uninterrupted on a great hi-fi system.
Tickets are available from Grooves, via See Tickets or on the door.
