Poetry Corner: Give Peace A Chance

On the 11th of August 1945 the Allies refuse Japan’s offer to surrender on the condition that Emperor Hirohito retains his status.

On August 6th and 9th 1945 the US with the agreement of the UK Government dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki – killing at the time an estimated 129,000 and 226,000 people.

Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 15. The unconditional surrender was formally signed on September 2nd.
