Poetry Corner: Politician

By Bernie Bell

I’m shaping up for the Orkney Blues Festival – we have the Science Festival first, starting this week  – then – Blues/Rock  – one of my favourite kinds of music. https://www.orkneyblues.co.uk/

I was listening to a CD by Cream, singing along with the familiar words, then realised how very relevant they are to today, and to certain world leaders I can think of. So, here they are, the words, then the music, on YouTube – enjoy – if that’s the right word to use!

Politician (BBC Sessions)

By Cream

Hey now, baby
Get into my big black car
Hey now, baby
Get into my big black car
I want to just show you
What my politics are

I’m a political man
And I practice what I preach
I’m a political man
And I practice what I preach
So don’t deny me, baby
Not while you’re in my reach

I support the left
Though I’m leaning, leaning to the right
I support the left
Though I’m leaning to the right
But I’m just not there
When it’s coming to a fight

Hey now, baby
Get into my big black car
Hey now, baby
Get into my big black car
I want to just show you
What my politics are

  1. Did you notice, there’s another verse, in the recording?

    “Well I run this country
And I run that country over there, too

    Well I run this country
And I run that country over there, too.

So come on, baby baby, let me show you how I’m gonna run you.”

    Hmmmmm –
    Trump re. Britain?
    England re. Scotland?
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And on a better note – it’s followed by…..PRINCE! An antidote to most things.

  2. I bought the vinyl when it first came out and still have it. It’s not so much that the words are relevant today, but that politicians haven’t changed.

  3. Same here, Andy. I saved up my pocket money to buy it – aged 13!

Blimey – we agree about something! In fact, two things – groovy music, and politicians.
