Covid – 19 is now the official title for the latest Corona virus outbreak.
Latest? Aye the latest, SARS and MERS were corona viruses as well.
The good news is that the number of new cases in Hubei province in China where Wuhan is the capital is reducing. The bad news are the spikes of outbreaks potentially spread by “super spreaders”. The South Korean outbreak certainly was. The female responsible had originally tested negative but was found positive on retest. She showed no symptoms at all. The Italian authorities say they now have 229 cases with 7 deaths. The most worrying spike is in Iran where figures of cases are under dispute and Iran is not so able to deal with a viral outbreak as is Italy.
Drug trials are under way in China but a vaccine is still 12 to 18 months in the pipeline. Another worry is that some politico’s like Trump and unfortunately our own UK Health Secretary are suggesting Covid-19 will fizzle out when the weather warms up.
Unfortunately the evidence suggests otherwise . MERS spread in Saudi in August when it was very hot. Trump is well known for discarding Scientific evidence if it conflicts with “his beliefs”. Westminster is also guilty of discarding scientific and expert evidence if it doesn’t suit their plans.
Global Warming, Risk of flooding, financial implications of Brexit and Austerity are but recent examples.
