SHORE the Scottish Seaweed Company wins snack innovation award

You know they say that sheep are much more intelligent than we give them credit for, but in this instance I am going to stick up for them; well the North Ronaldsay Sheep to be more precise who have been showing the benefits of a seaweed diet for generations. It should therefore come as no surprise to learn of a local company that has won a seaweed snack innovation award.

SHORE the Scottish Seaweed Company (SHORE) has won Best Snacking Innovation for their Sweet Sriracha Seaweed Chips at the World Food Innovation Awards 2021. This success comes hot on the heels of SHORE winning a Great Taste Award at the end of 2020. SHORE has again impressed a panel of industry experts with their innovative concept of turning a sustainable, local superfood into better for you snacks that taste delicious.

“Seaweed, the sustainable & healthy ocean gem turned into chips. No need for portion control here. Wow!”

Shore have been growing, collecting and making use of high quality seaweed since 2016 and are based in Wick right up at the tip of Scotland only sixteen miles from John o’ Groats. Their innovative products include Pestos and Tapenades, Seaweed chips and Seaweed Clusters and can be found at various stockists or bought online here.

The winners of the World Food Innovation Awards were announced during a special, virtual ceremony in association with IFE. The judging panel considered 276 entries from 22 countries. The Best Snacking Innovation category was narrowed down to 3 finalists with the judges selecting SHORE as the winner for their innovative Sweet Sriracha flavour that combines quinoa and a tangy chilli seasoning with their signature umami-rich organic Scottish seaweed, straight from the clean waters of Wick. The panel said: “seaweed, the sustainable & healthy ocean gem turned into chips. No need for portion control here. Wow!”

This award marks another important milestone in SHORE’s mission to stay at the forefront of the healthier snacking revolution. Keith Paterson, joint-managing director, SHORE, said: “At SHORE our success is based on creating tasty plant-based seaweed snacks and foods that appeal to the growing number of mainstream health-conscious consumers who are increasingly seeking sustainably sourced foods. Winning this award is another great achievement for the company and we’re thrilled that people are recognising that innovation is at the heart of what we do”.

A little bit of information from their site, for me it is a did you know….?

“Seaweed is packed full of umami, which roughly translated from Japanese means deliciousness. Umami is recognised as the 5th flavour (the other 4 being sweet, salty, bitter & sour) that gives food a uniquely deep rich savoury flavour.”
