A Cinder Toffee Memory

By Bernie Bell

I included discovering Mrs. Tilly’s Honeycomb Toffee in our ‘One Day At a Time ‘ series……. https://theorkneynews.scot/2021/09/04/week-thirty-five-one-day-at-a-time/

And this brought back a memory from about 40 years ago.  It was my friend’s birthday, he  loved cinder toffee, couldn’t find it to buy – so I made some, put it in a bag tied with a ribbon in a big mug with ‘The Yorkshire-man’s Prayer’ on it……..

‘See all, hear all, say nowt

Eat all, sup all, pay nowt

And if tha’ does owt for nowt

Do it for theesen’.”

He was delighted!

I used to know how to make cinder toffee, but that’s long gone – another casualty of my Swiss Cheese memory – but with Helen’s permission here’s her recipe, which had my mouth watering ……

As one of my Great-nephews said  – “It’s a wonder you have a tooth in your head!”
