Workshops at The Northlight Gallery Stromness

The Northlight Gallery, Stromness is offering two days of workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday next week (9th and 10th August).

Day one – The Artist Book ‘Artform’

Starting by looking at a few very good examples of different sorts of artist books, this workshop will consider the artist book ‘artform’, including photo books, followed by looking at how different techniques and materials influence the experience/interpretation of the artwork/meaning of the subject matter of the book.

Day Two – Making Handmade Books

The workshop includes a visit to William’s Vintage Paper Company along the road and see his traditionally made codex books. Back at Northlight participants will be able to experiment with making a hand made book.

Each day will be programmed with two workshops 11-1 and 2-4 with a break for lunch between 1 and 2. There are a few places to buy lunch within a few minutes walk from the gallery.

The cost is £10 per day. Sufficient materials to experiment will be provided although it would help if artists brought a few simple tools for themselves to use (cutters, rulers, cutting mats etc.).

The tutors, George Logan and Meg Telfer, have considerable experience. Cary Welling’s own art practice has included making artist books for over 30 years.
