Social Security Scotland administers financial support payments to people with a disability.
The benefits for people with a disability in Scotland replace the Department for Work and Pensions’ Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for Children, DLA and Personal Independence Payment. If you are already getting disability benefits from DWP your award will transfer automatically and you do not need to apply separately.
However, they may be many Scots who are not receiving any disability payments yet and they are being urged to check to see if they are eligible through Social Security Scotland.
Child Disability Payment
This payment provides financial support to help families and carers with the extra costs of caring for a disabled child or young person or a child or young person with a long-term health condition.
Nearly 44,000 children in Scotland were receiving Child Disability Payment as of 30 September 2022. Almost 9,800 of these children were awarded the benefit after a direct application to Social Security Scotland while around 34,000 children were transferred to the benefit from Disability Living Allowance for children, provided by the Department for Work and Pensions.
Adult Disability Payment
This payment is available to people aged between 16 and state pension age who are disabled, have a long-term health condition or a terminal illness.
