As the St Magnus Way was to be honoured with two awards made by the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum (SPRF) it held its AGM in Kirkwall on Saturday 30th of September and combined it with a walk along part of the Way the day before and a visit to Shapinsay on the Sunday to sample the Shapinsay Reflective Walks and a look at the Tea Plantation.
The presentations were made by SPRF Chairman Rev. Martin Fair, who said
‘SPRF were delighted to be in Orkney for our autumn gathering and as part of that, to walk a section of the magnificent St. Magnus Way. But the real highlight of our visit was to present two awards: the John Henderson Award (a kind of ‘outstanding contribution’ recognition) and a Gold Accreditation for the route itself – the first Scottish Pilgrim Route to receive this status. Hugely deserved awards in both cases.’
Orkney Pilgrimage Chairperson, Stuart Little, commented:
‘since 2015 a huge amount of work has been done by trustees, volunteers and local artists to get the St Magnus Way fit for Gold accreditation. Our thanks go to all that have contributed to this project that is now bringing visitors to Orkney from all over the world and is being enjoyed by locals too.’
