Sgathaich, an old woman with long hair and wearing a crown

Konosuba’s third season is currently being broadcast this anime season while I write this. The Isekai comedy series adapted into an anime based on the light novels. Those light novels have received various spinoffs starring other characters and today we’re going to look at one that focused on one of the main characters in the series Megumin.

KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! started as a light novel series  in June 2014 and received an anime adaption last year 2023. While a spinoff, it’s also quite a bit of a prequel to the events of the main series focusing on the life of the Crimson Demon Megumin and featured characters that would eventually enter the main series plot, notably the 5th novel or the movie which somewhat adapted the events of that novel.

Right away we are greeted by what we all know was coming, EXPLOSION MAGIC! as we see the very first explosion magic Megumin witnessed that made her obsessed with the spell. Then the next 6 episodes are her in magic school. This is however a magic school for Crimson Demons so everyone is over the top, the teachers teach you to be over the top and all the actual teaching is really just a means to gain experience points so they can get advanced magic as soon as possible. I’m not joking, episode 2 has a bunch of Demons getting loose and the teachers end up blowing up the village because they are more focused on how flashy their spells are and get caught up in showing off. The dub returns and is handled by the same voice actors from the main show… though outside of Megumin and Yunyun, the rest don’t appear till the tail end and mostly in the background.

The series can be broken down into 3 sections with the first part featuring Megumin at the Crimson Demon village taking up the most as that’s roughly half the anime there. Then we move to the city of Arcanretia which we saw in season 2 of Konosuba, so you know it’s where the majority of Aqua’s worshipers are, and all their craziness. And finally the last few episodes (after one episode of desert travel) have her reach the town of Axel and we see the events that were basically glossed over in the montages of episode 1 from Megumin’s perspective.

I cant say this is required viewing yet. If we get a Konosuba season 4 it probably will be as one of the characters from the spinoff shows up, but you can watch the movie fine without seeing this show. It’s a fun little side story that Megumin fans will enjoy and does contain that Konosuba humour if you are craving more of it.
