Thank you for this – I get the impression that some folk think we’re foolish for still being careful – better safe than sorry.

  2. Yes, it has gotten to a point where everybody who is still cautious (wears masks for example) almost has to defend their decisions.
And yes, it is better to be safe than sorry…
Many have not grasped yet that this is an avoidable disease, there is no need to let this virus roam completely free through societies and just shrug the shoulders at the deaths, long term consequences etc. that are treated as collateral damage of a no-risk-no-fun society that simply does not care.
One can withdraw from society to some extent… and just do your own thing. Quite happily even, at least from my perspective. The thing is, you cannot do this completely. You might have to go to the dentist (if you get an appointment that is), or visit other health services. You’ll be very lucky, if anybody there is masked.

Other than that… wasn’t there much talk of learning from the pandemic? I don’t see much learning there. In most buildings ventilation is the same it was in 2020. The public still has no clue whatsoever that masks only work when you use them correctly. And that there are certainly areas (particularly hospitals) where masks should have stayed for good.
In the absence of learning… what if….. a much worse disease comes around (there are several candidates one could think of), a disease that does not (conveniently?!) wipe out predominantly the elderly, the disabled, the ones with “underlying health conditions”? At the moment one could get the impression that their demise is seen as a tool to counteract demographic changes, hence nobody bothers. The value of people with underlying health conditions seems to be marginal.
(What this says about our society, is obvious… and I find it sickening.)

Already, there is confusion which variants should be targeted for next vaccine rounds. There are simply too many, not all coming from the same strains.
Covid has surprised us before… we cannot rule out that it will be doing this again. At the beginning many said not to worry because corona viruses only slowly mutate. Normally, this may be… but this one was “turbocharged”.
There are some scientists that say that there is a potential of Sars-Cov2 merging with MERS. If this is a possibility, this is concerning.
Also concerning: the more virus variant “soup” there is around in humans, uncontrolled, unchecked… it could find its way back into animals, mutate there quietly and undetected and come back to us in a changed form.

Has everybody forgotten the chaos, horror and death in hospitals all over the world? The graveyards overflowing in some regions? Would we want to risk something like this again? Is our trust in the finances of our government to fund then again urgently needed research into new vaccines justified?

This virus may now not kill the same amount of people it did at the very beginning. But with vaccinations scaled back (and numerous doses wasted, the Scottish figures have only recently been published), immunity is waning. And speaking of immunity isn’t even correct. Because you were not immune against the infection and “just” in most cases protected against ending up in hospital or a coffin.

What if… the next one is a really nasty one, so nasty that the case fatality rate is eyewatering? Will we come to regret that we have never educated the public properly how to prevent infections? Because again, the very same disruptions to the economy, to delivery chains and so forth would then happen.

    Rant over.

    Not a rant – a reasoned argument.
