A new snorkel trail will launch on 1 September in Orkney, offering residents and visitors the chance to explore the stunning marine life surrounding the islands.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust worked with Stromness Museum and local communities to co-design the new trail, which has six stops: three around the mainland and one each on Stronsay, Hoy and Shapinsay.
The famous Churchill Barriers are of course included in the self-guided snorkel trail.
A fun-filled day is planned to celebrate the launch on 1 September, organised by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and Stromness Museum as well as a range of local businesses, groups and individuals.
At Finstown Car Park, Kraken Diving will be leading two guided snorkelling sessions; limited discounted places are available which you can email Kraken Diving directly to enquire about. There will be additional coastal activities, including Seasearch training and a Bioblitz to record as many species of wildlife as possible in the area.
Indoors, at the Firth Community Centre, there will be sea stalls staffed by crafters and conservationists who are passionate about Orkney’s marine life. There will be indoor ocean-inspired activities, as well as tea and cake.
Elouise Dalziel, Living Seas Policy & Engagement Officer with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, said:
“We hope as many people as possible come along on Sunday 1 September to help us celebrate the launch of the snorkel trail.
“So many local businesses and people have supported creation of the new trail, not least Cath Downie and Pete Raines who instead of asking for wedding gifts last year asked people to donate funds for the new trail.
“They’re an example of how passionate people are about the sea surrounding these islands, and how enthusiastic they are for visitors to explore more of Orkney’s incredible marine life.”

Katy Firth from Stromness Museum said: “The event on 1 September will be a great, fun day for all the family.
“Even if you’ve swum or snorkelled here many times before, or are yet to step foot in Orkney’s waters, you’ll learn lots and be surprised at the variety of incredible marine life our waters have to offer.
“The new snorkel trail will support responsible eco-tourism across Orkney and inspire people, local and visiting, to connect with, value and protect the wildlife in our seas.”
The event is free to attend, but the guided snorkelling sessions are £30 per person and those places must be booked in advance. Find out more here: Orkney Snorkel Trail Launch
