We’ve been to the Birsay/Orkney Antiques Centre many times http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=16369

But not since before Covid, and not since Alec changed the name of the shop to  ‘The Antiques Emporium’.

The Cambridge Dictionary definition of emporium is …..“A large shop that sells many different types of goods.”

And that’s exactly what it is.

To give some idea of the variety of ‘goods’ on offer, here’s a list of some of the things which  Alec had already sold on the day we were there:

A steel cabinet

Some plastic figures of Cowboys and Indians.

A wooden apple.

A German steam engine.

We then bought …

An old Captain’s chair

A Desert Rose

A piece of Smoky Quartz.

An Abalone shell

And……two bowls made from a substance that pre-dates Bakelite….

There are ‘rooms’  furnished as old fashioned Parlours

There are toys

shelves of old toys, dinky cars

Tools

shelves of old tools

Jugs

a row of painted jugs, large plates and toy soldiers

Egg cups

various egg cups and decorative eggs

Fossils

box containing several fossils

A wise saying carved on an Arts & Crafts style cupboard

Judge not a book by the cover , carved onto the top of a display case

And …. A ship in full sail

large model yacht

As we left, I noticed Alec’s individual approach to fencing

old bicycles used as fencing

All I can say is – go there – browse – talk to Alec and hear some stories.

  1. Birsay is quite big, so providing a location would be useful.

    1. OK…..driving, walking, cycling along with Boardhouse Loch on your right – just as the road curves to the right there’s a Standing Stone, which you can’t miss seeing. I mentioned it in this article…

      https://theorkneynews.scot/2018/03/09/didnt-we-have-a-loverly-time-the-day-we-went-to-birsay/

And I quote…..“Then to the Birsay Antiques Centre near the big standing stone, known as the Stane O’ Quoybune or Wheelin Stane.”

There’s a sign for the Emporium at the beginning of the track to the right of the Stone.

If you want a Grid Reference – I’ve forgotten how.

  2. No need for over complication. The location was necessary but omitted.
