Orkney Islands Council, in their wisdom, have ruled that the insulation in the ceiling at Fernvalley Wildlife Rescue Centre is unsuitable and must be removed, though it’s been there since 2019 with no questions having been raised about its suitability.

The owners of Fernvalley have until June, then they will have to close having, hopefully, found alternative homes for their rescued animals.

They had hoped to sell Fernvalley as a going concern and retire, but who will want to buy the property with this difficulty hanging over it?

I don’t know what the solution could be but, to me,  this is a situation where people brought something different and worthwhile to Orkney, only to be met with unnecessary difficulties raised by OIC.  I fully appreciate that Planning Regulations need to be followed, but feel that OIC could be more compassionate in this case.

Here’s is a reminder of what Fernvalley has to offer…
