Fergus Tickell of the National Energy System Operator (NESO) will give a talk on planning the UK energy system of the future, Tuesday 20 May, 7pm, King Street Halls, Kirkwall.
Our increasingly complex energy system must be planned and operated in a way that considers the interactions across electricity, gas and other forms of energy. We also need to consider the interdependencies with other sectors, such as water, transport, telecommunications and industry. – NESO
The talk is being hosted by OREF (Orkney Renewable Energy Forum).

OREF joint Chair Neil Kermode said:
‘We are really excited that Fergus is coming to see us.
‘Local people know the success we have had in turning the county from an importer of electricity to an exporter. The system is evolving as we electrify our transport, install heat pumps and use electricity more and more. This visit is a chance to show off what has been achieved, but also discuss what more can be done to make the most of the resources for the county.’
By engaging with the energy planning process OREF believe it will be possible to make sure the needs of Orkney are taken into account. By understanding how the planning is done it will be possible to see how best to provide real life experience into NESO’s work and make sure Orkney’s voice is heard and respected.
During the visit NESO will also be meeting OIC and local businesses before going to see the world’s most powerful tidal turbine which OREF member Orbital Marine Power have installed at the EMEC test site in the Fall of Warness.
“We are grateful Fergus has agreed to give a talk on NESO’s work and plans and we are sure this will be of interest to the Orkney public’ explained Neil.
The event is free for OREF members and £3 on the door for non-members with free tea and coffee.
