Islanders resident in Orkney and Shetland will have their Northern Isles Ferry fares set at the low season rate for both passengers, cars and cabins, from 24 March 2026.

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney made the welcome announcement as he set off for a visit in support of the SNP candidates standing in Orkney and Shetland. John Swinney said:

“The Scottish Government is supporting the people and economy of the Northern Isles by investing up to £1.8 million in 2026-27 to remove seasonal ferry fares for islanders.

“This will make ferry travel more affordable, save people money and support household budgets.

“The removal of mid and peak season ferry fares for eligible residents of Orkney and Shetland will help even more islanders sustainably access work, connect with family and friends, and benefit from education and training opportunities.

“We have heard clearly that islanders do not want to be restricted by seasonal pricing and we have listened, delivering lower fares for those who rely on ferry travel the most.”

Islanders must register for a NorthLink Islander ID to access the year-round low season ferry fare, which includes the existing islander discount.

NorthLink will contact eligible Islanders who have already booked mid and peak season travel to refund the difference in their fare.

    Two issues here.
    1. What about the Pentland ferry. It seems unfair that they are excluded from this scheme?

2 the real issue is for fake living in the outer Isles who I have any dependent on Orkney Ferries. Given that we don’t have a train service or a bus service that we can access freely when are they going to give pensioners free travel on Orkney Ferries?

I was once told that folk living in the islands should not be disadvantage and they should receive the same benefits as mainland Scotland. This is clearly not the case when it comes to free travel for the over 60s. This will clearly be an election issue that will need to be addressed by candidates in Orkney looking for my vote.
