the outside of Trenabies

I’ve been to Trenabies many times over the years and the cafe on Albert Street, Kirkwall, has never disappointed.

My most recent visit continued on that positive vibe.

Trenabies can get very busy during the height of the tourist season, but on my visit this week it was relatively quiet. There is a constant stream of customers who come in for takeaway coffees and the efficient staff deal with that and providing table service for the sit-in customers.

I ordered an Americano (regular) £3.35, and a BBQ Toasted Wrap £9.75.

a toasted wrap with a side garnish of crispy onions, lettuce and relish

The Wrap was filled with chicken and bacon, with a scrummy BBQ sauce (not too much). The plate was the right size for the portion – and thankfully it was a plate, and not some piece of offcut wood.

The coffee was good and strong. Trenabies supports Fair Trade producers and locally made homebakes.

I’m glad you’ve posted this. – it gives me a chance to add my tuppenceworth. We used to go to Trenabies, then Covid hit. We were very Covid conscious and didn’t go into places where there’d be un-known people, including cafes, for quite a few years. When we started to go into cafes again, for some reason the places we chose to go to had changed. Habits do change!

A couple of weeks ago we intended to go to the Pomona (which is most excellent) but it was shut….

It was raining, so we wanted to get indoors as soon as poss. Looking along the street, there was Trenabies, so we went there. We realised that we’d not been there since pre-Covid but, as you say, it didn’t disappoint. We both had vege-burger with sweet potato fries – absolutely gorgeous. My Earl Grey tea was the real McKoy and Mike liked his coffee so much that he had two!
I’m not sure, but I think the decor has changed a bit – it seems more light and airy – maybe that’s just memory playing tricks.
AND…there’s music but not loud and obtrusive as tends to be the case in a lot of eateries these days. OK – I’m a slightly grouchy old lady!
Trenabies is definitely back on our list of cafes – nothing to grouch about there, at all.
