The appointment of Professor Christine McCourt, a highly respected expert in maternal and child health, as the independent chair of the Scottish Government’s national review of maternity services has been welcomed by Maree Todd, Highlands Islands SNP MSP.
The review will examine how maternity services can be improved across Scotland, with particular focus on the needs of women and families living in rural and island communities.
Commenting, Maree Todd MSP said:

“I welcome the positive statement from the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in Parliament today, setting out the scope of the independent national review of maternity services in Scotland.
“The appointment of Professor Christine McCourt as independent chair is extremely welcome. She is highly respected in her field and brings a wealth of expertise and experience to this important work.
“I am particularly encouraged by the strong focus on examining maternity services in rural and island communities, especially Caithness, and the commitment to engage with the women and families who rely on those services.
“I am also pleased that the review will consider how NHS boards engage with local communities when decisions are taken about maternity services. As MSP for the Highlands and Islands, I will continue to work to ensure that the voices of communities across the region are heard and reflected throughout this process.
“I look forward to seeing the review’s findings and recommendations on how maternity services can be strengthened and improved for women and families across Scotland.
“As the Minister with responsibility for Women’s Health, I will also be taking forward work on midwifery apprenticeships.
“The introduction of an earn whilst you learn apprenticeship will help strengthen the future workforce and support the long-term sustainability of maternity services in rural and island communities right across the Highlands and Islands.
“This is an area I campaigned hard on during the election, and I look forward to making progress.”
