A series of 1-day training workshops teaching the heritage, material science and craft of traditional earth materials, delivered by craftsperson/artist Becky Little and Conservation Architect Tom Morton, in partnership with the University of Highlands & Islands and Orkney International Science Festival.
A rare opportunity to open a material doorway and delve into the magic world of Orkney’s building subsoils.

All workshops run 9.30 – 5 and are held at the Nav School in Stromness Suitable for all levels of experience and ages 16+.
The training event will include:
- an understanding of traditional clay earth construction in Orkney
- the Scottish and global context of Orkney’s earthen heritage
- the science of how earth works as a building material
- the character and properties of local earths on Orkney
- how to identify earth materials, record, analyse, repair and maintain them
- hands-on experience mixing and making
- good practice in archaeology and building conservation, sources of further technical support
- questions & answers – bring photographs and samples!
It is suitable for:
Public day – anyone with an interest in heritage, aged 16+
Professional days – anyone who works or learns in the heritage or sustainable construction sector – archaeologists, students, site managers and guides, heritage volunteers, local authority officers, builders, architects and academics, potters, plasterers, masons, craftspeople and artists. CPD Certificates provided.
You don’t need to bring anything, apart from your lunch. Be prepared to get your hands dirty. The site is accessible, and please let us know if you require any special support to participate.
