Halloween image of Sgathaich with spider webs, bones and wearing a witches hat

When last we visited this series it saw the tale of a lonely pumpkin threatening the children with a knife. Turning very early on a childish haunted house into a slasher movie. But a year has passed and a new terror stalks Hallows Eve.

The Crimson Harvest Festival is the second Halloween episode of Digimon Ghost Game, and we can now assume the events of the series have been happening in real time as opposed to compressed time like some series since this is treated as another Halloween. So one year will have had to pass over the course of the series.

The episode doesn’t take its time giving us the mon of the week quickly showing Witchmon turning two girls into witches loyal to her and a bit evil while turning their friend into a mouse. So there’s not really a mystery about this one. The villain’s plan is put forward very early, transforming everyone who is dressed as a witch into one of her witch minions and everyone else into mice. Sadly none of our 3 Digimon tamer/friends are dressed as a witch but Ruli’s friends Aoi and Shiori do get transformed.

The episode is nowhere near as shocking or frightening as the previous Halloween episode with Pumpkinmon, no scenes of a knife being stabbed into a pumpkin that is encasing people’s heads. It feels more like enjoying the spooky nature of Halloween rather than going for out right horror. Witchmon is however presented as a larger through than Pumpkinmon, wanting to make a nation of witches while Pumpkinmon was more a child with a knife. Less personal  but a greater threat as a whole, especially with the army of witches.

Despite the full cast being assembled and each able to go to Ultimate at this point in the series at episode 49 (the series really held back on giving the cast their megas) and despite two of Ruli’s friends being turned, they give the big fight to Hiro and Gammamon rather than her and Angoramon, which I sort of disagree with as Ruli had the more personal stakes in the episode. It was good to call back to last year’s episode with Pumpkinmon showing up to help out though.

The episode gives one small tease towards the Gulus’ plot but it’s just one line and nothing important so you don’t need to watch this for any references to the final few episodes. So ultimately you will just watch this one for the fun Halloween adventure against a witch. And much like the other episodes of Ghost Game it does a good job even showing lower level Digimon as a friend, something that Ghost Game has done better than any other series in the franchise.
