After a string of positive reviews and hardback sales, The Flight of the Vikings, Daring Escapes in Small Boats from Nazi-Occupied Norway 1940 – 45 by Montrose author Andrew Orr is now out in paperback.
The Norwegian – Scottish WW2 history, with a strong Orkney element, has achieved not only excellent sales but also widespread five-star acclaim in the press, from historians and media celebrities.
Commenting Andrew Orr said:
‘I welcome the issue of the paperback, as it will allow more people to learn about this previously unrecorded WW2 saga of daring escapes across the cruel North Sea. In the tradition of their Viking ancestors they took to rowing boats, yachts, kayaks and small fishing boats whilst being relentlessly hunted by the Nazis. Each crossing is an extraordinary adventure in itself’.

More than 4000 people and 370 small boats attempted an escape to join the Allied forces and many of these were embraced by Orcadians.
Andrew continued:
‘These escapers were self-selected by their personal bravery and became the backbone of some of the most successful special forces of the war. These included the Shetland Bus operation, the famous Kompani Linge commandos and MI6 agents that tormented the Nazis for the rest of the war’.
